Speech
2008-2009 Speech Officer
Meetings are Mondays and Thursdays from 3 to 5
Speech Types
- Extemporaneous Speaking -
This event requires the participant to prepare a comprehensive persuasive speech in one-half hour, without previously
knowing the assigned topic. Participants are allowed to draw on evidence that their team has collected.
- Humorous and Dramatic Interpretation - Participants verbally interpret selections from literature or plays.
The emphasis is on the technique that the participant uses in expressing and interpreting the words of the selection,
rather than acting them out.
- Duo Interpretation - This event is the same as the above, except that two participants verbally interpret
the selection, rather than one.
- Original Oratory - In this event, the participant must write, memorize, and give an original persuasive
speech. Typical running length is seven to nine minutes.
- Oratorical Declamation - The participant selects a previously published non-fiction oratory, address, or speech,
and reenacts it for judges. Typical selections include famous sermons and political addresses.
