Objectives

The objectives of this project are to attain competency in the following areas:

  1. Identify the basic parts of a computer system and the relationships among components.
  2. Describe characteristics and functions of CPUs, motherboards, random access memory (RAM), expansion connections, floppy drives, hard drives, and CD-ROM drives.
  3. Explain the functions and characteristics of system expansion devices (e.g., graphics cards, sound cards, and modems).
  4. Demonstrate the use of connectivity devices and peripheral equipment (e.g., portable storage devices, printers, cable modem, and wireless technologies).
  5. Perform basic operations in an operating system environment.
  6. Manage the various file types.
  7. Describe the basic computer start-up sequence.
  8. Compare and contrast the basic differences among operating systems.
  9. Investigate basic issues affecting system purchase and upgrade decisions.
  10. Investigate the building stages of a computer.
